Author: (English) Samuel Smiles
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2006-07-01
Features: This book is one of the most popular motivational books in the world to date. It revolves around themes such as self-reliance, hardship, diligence, honesty, integrity, courage, personal character, and the spirit of perseverance. In the book, Smiles highly praises those who overcome hardships and achieve success. He says, "Hardship is very important for a person. Experiencing hardship allows us to learn how to overcome the various difficulties we face." "Hardship and the vicissitudes of life are the harshest yet most noble teachers." In his view, poverty is not, what is is the lack of self-reliance. Because "If we can never be self-reliant, we will never be able to escape poverty. Only the strength of self-reliance can save oneself." To succeed, one must not only have the mindset of self-reliance but also strong willpower. He says, "Napoleon believed that the power of will is ten times greater than material power." "Perseverance and unwavering determination can enable a person to achieve any endeavor." The great teachings in this book have influenced countless people, to the point where many consider Smiles their "spiritual mentor." For this reason, the book received widespread attention in the UK and around the world upon its release. In the month it was published in the UK, it was reprinted four times. By 1910, the book had been reprinted 34 times. In the United States, as soon as How to Succeed in Life was published in the UK, pirated copies appeared immediately, even becoming "widespread." In Japan, as soon as the book entered bookstores, readers rushed to buy it, with publishers printing day and night to keep up with demand. Within a few years, the book sold over a million copies. To this day, the actual sales figures of the book have likely become astronomical and difficult to calculate.
