Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Full Translation)

Author: (English) Carroll
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2006-04-01
Features: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1865 and caused a sensation in the literary world. In 1871, Carroll published its sequel, Alice Through the Looking-Glass, which became wildly popular in Europe and America. Carroll's fairy tales are the most translated British works since Shakespeare's. Since their publication, they have been beloved by both children and parents, marking a milestone in the history of children's literature. Encyclop?dia Britannica praised them for "raising the art of absurd literature to the highest level." This book takes readers on a dreamlike journey into a series of bizarre stories, with plots that are mysterious and ever-changing. On the surface, the work seems absurd, yet it is actually rich in logical rigor and profound meaning, representing a perfect blend of wisdom and fantasy. The time and space in Carroll's writing are no longer fixed or absolute but fluid and relative. Its symbolic significance allows everyone to see their own reflection in the dreamlike world, transcending time and space. Thus, it not only attracts young readers but also appeals to adults. Another distinctive feature of this book is its humorous and witty language. Mr. Zhao Yuanren once called it a "book of jokes." Carroll often uses exaggeration, even nonsensical language, to accurately define the personalities of his characters. The text is filled with poetry and wordplay, which poses significant challenges for translation. A literal translation would inevitably disrupt the flow and artistic essence of the text. Therefore, when dealing with these issues, I adopted a method of translating as closely as possible to the original meaning, transforming English wordplay into Chinese wordplay. Since Carroll enjoyed playing with letters, he invented many neologisms in the poem Jabberwocky in Alice Through the Looking-Glass. I made corresponding adjustments based on the original meaning.
