Hydroponics is a method of soilless cultivation. Its history dates back a long time. As early as 1860, German scientists Sachs and Knop succeeded in cultivating plants using a nutrient solution made from 10 elements of inorganic salts, a method known as hydroponics. In 1929, American Gerocke applied hydroponics to cultivate tomatoes, but due to ventilation issues and iron deficiency symptoms, the enthusiasm for this method declined. After years of effort by scientists, plant hydroponics finally became a mature production technology system and was widely promoted.
In recent years, hydroponic technology has been introduced into the horticulture industry, but it is mostly used in facility-based horticulture, where the equipment is large and expensive, making it unsuitable for small-scale cultivation in households. For home gardening, researchers from the Soil and Fertilizer Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, after years of research and drawing on advanced foreign experience and technology, creatively proposed a static hydroponic method for home flowers and developed the "Green Spring" hydroponic nutrient solution. This method dissolves all the essential nutrients for flower growth into the culture solution, allowing the flowers to grow in their own nutrient-rich water, fundamentally replacing traditional soil cultivation methods.
The advantages of home hydroponic gardening include:
1. Simplifying the process of growing flowers, making it cleaner and healthier with fewer pests and diseases;
2. Offering flexible combinations;
3. Allowing the observation of plant roots.
People enjoy growing flowers, but limited living space, the chores of watering, fertilizing, weeding, and pest control brought by flower cultivation can somewhat dampen their enthusiasm for pursuing beauty. Additionally, it creates worries when traveling or going on trips. Hydroponic gardening, however, is highly clean and hygienic, with fewer pests and diseases, eliminating such concerns. Hydroponic gardening avoids issues such as plant dehydration and death due to insufficient watering or overly moist soil from frequent watering, which can hinder growth or even lead to death. It simplifies the process of growing flowers, making it easy for everyone to quickly master.
Hydroponic gardening allows people to choose flowers and containers based on their interests and preferences, while also creatively arranging flowers with different shapes and colors to achieve effects even better than flower arrangements. It not only allows of the stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants but also the continuously growing roots, adding even more charm to the diverse flowers. There are many flowers suitable for hydroponics, and we have selected 32 for this book to introduce to you. Readers can refer to this book and enjoy the fun of growing flowers hydroponically.
The photographs in the main body of this book, except for hyacinth and tulips, were provided by Comrade Zhang Luguī. We express our sincere gratitude to him.
