Features: Wang Xiaobo's works have remained popular, which brings me great comfort. Once, the writer Sun Yu said to me that his daughter, who was studying at Beijing No. 4 High School, loved Wang Xiaobo's works, and so did her classmates. A writer's works being cherished by the younger generation with no shared life experiences first proves that there is something in his works that transcends time. This is what is known as "timeless themes," such as love and beauty. Wang Xiaobo's novels have created their own beauty in the world of literature, a beauty that shines like a strong light, piercing through the barriers of time and inspiring the hearts of young readers who are just beginning to learn to read and write. Secondly, this phenomenon also shows that some of Wang Xiaobo's targets of critique are still very much alive. When Wang Xiaobo's works first appeared, I heard people say that he spoke the words we all wanted to say. Even today, these words and ideas are still needed in our society. From Wang Xiaobo's enduring popularity, we can only conclude that the spread of liberal ideas in China still has a long way to go. The artistic beauty Wang Xiaobo created and the liberal ideas he disseminated through his critique of the real world have secured a place in the world's cultural and intellectual treasury, even though there is no certificate like the Nobel Prize to validate it. However, I believe that time itself is the certificate of the value of his works. Li Yinhe, January 16, 2006
