What should I do if a newborn has a stuffy nose and a slight cough?

Patient's question:

The child is just 45 days old. Recently, I don't know what's wrong, but the child has been stuffy nose and a bit of coughing. It's not even fever. My husband and I are very worried. What should we do?

Doctor's answer:

Drink more water for the baby to thin out the mucus. If the baby has poor digestion, it can lead to excessive mucus and heatiness. Nasal congestion may be due to the baby catching a cold. If the baby is breastfed, it could be that the mother's diet is too greasy or too cold, causing indigestion and a cold in the baby. Drink more plain water without sugar for the baby, as sugar can produce mucus. For nasal congestion, check if there are dry, hard mucus plugs deep in the baby's nostrils, blocking the airways. You can use a medical cotton swab dipped in medical saline to soften the mucus plugs. Gradually, the mucus plugs will come out with the baby's sneezes or coughs.
