It expresses the dialogues between Socrates and his friends in simple English that everyone can understand, making it interesting and engaging—this is the purpose of this new version. —I.A. Richards
The Republic, a major work by the great ancient Greek philosopher Plato, is a dialogue that is vivid and engaging, intended to elaborate on his ideal perfect state. It is both a philosophical masterpiece and a timeless literary work. The British scholar I.A. Richards has translated it into Basic English, providing the best bridge for us to understand this classical masterpiece. This book is presented in English-Chinese parallel text, aiming to offer a useful resource for readers interested in English who also want to read "The Republic."
"The Republic" is one of Plato's approximately thirty important dialogues and one of his most significant works in his lifetime. The debate unfolds through a series of questions and answers among a few individuals, using illustrative examples to explain and argue for Plato's views on the ideal state. The opposing sides in the debate move from contradictions to a unified conclusion. Although the Basic English translation by Richards is shorter in length, it retains the same section numbering as the original, making it convenient for comparison and reference with any other version.
(The original text contains repeated sections, which have been consolidated here for clarity.)
