Clinical manifestations of neonatal pneumonia

Patient's question:

My baby is 55 days old. He always has a cough with phlegm, and it has been about a month. After staying in the hospital for 10 days and getting injections, his condition improved slightly. But after going home, even with medication, he still has the cough with phlegm. Could it be neonatal pneumonia?

Doctor's answer:

Symptoms of pediatric pneumonia
When a baby gets pneumonia, the main symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The onset of pneumonia can be sudden or gradual, and it usually occurs several days after a respiratory infection. The first symptoms observed are fever or cough, with temperatures typically ranging from 38 to 39°C. In adenovirus pneumonia, high fever can persist for 1 to 2 weeks. Weak infants may not develop a fever or even have a temperature below normal.
In the early stages of neonatal pneumonia, the affected child may only experience reduced or no milk intake, restlessness, or no increase in body temperature. Then, more typical symptoms such as shortness of breath, foamy sputum, and bluish discoloration of the gums may appear. At this point, they should be taken to the hospital immediately for treatment.
