Is newborn hearing screening accurate?

Patient's question:

A few days ago, I took my baby to the children's hospital for a check-up. The doctor used the hearing aid to test the baby's hearing, but it didn't pass. The doctor also said that the baby's ear canals are small. I'm wondering if the newborn hearing screening is accurate?

Doctor's answer:

I suggest closely observing children's reactions to various sounds on a daily basis, while also avoiding exposure to noise and using ototoxic drugs with caution. It is important to prevent children from catching colds and head injuries, and most importantly, to follow up at the hospital on schedule. The vast majority of children will eventually have normal hearing. Even if hearing impairment is detected during the examination, with early treatment and intervention, children can ultimately integrate into mainstream society.
