Features: The "English-Chinese and Chinese-English Translation Course for Graduate Students" was compiled to better meet the needs of English teaching and curriculum reform for non-English major graduate students. Its purpose is to help students further improve their language translation skills on the basis of proficiently mastering listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities, enabling them to become high-quality talents with strong comprehensive English application skills and better serve society. This course primarily has the following two characteristics:
1. Practicality. In addition to introducing basic translation theory, methods, and techniques, this textbook emphasizes the translation skills of practical documents, which is particularly important for non-English major students. After graduation, they will be able to apply what they have learned in real-world scenarios, such as translating official letters, contracts, or scientific literature.
2. Targeted Approach. Non-English major graduate students differ from English major students. They focus more on translation methods and techniques rather than theoretical research, aiming to accurately and flawlessly translate materials in practical work. Based on this, this course introduces translation methods and techniques while highlighting the conversion of parts of speech between English and Chinese, the comparison of sentence structures, and the handling of special sentence patterns. Numerous examples are provided to illustrate these points, helping students deepen their understanding of translation methods and techniques.
Additionally, it is worth noting that most of the examples cited in this course are derived from the main textbook "Comprehensive English for Graduate Students." These examples may have been mentioned when discussing the main textbook or may not have been, but they have not been analyzed or studied from a translation methods perspective. Through this purposeful analysis and research, students will not only gain a deeper understanding of the texts they have studied but also better develop and enhance their language analysis and logical thinking skills.
