Features: It is precisely due to the continuous emergence of new materials, the ongoing development of new technologies and processes, as well as the increasing need and driving role of new materials and technologies in material theory, that the emerging discipline of "Materials Science and Engineering" has come into being. Since the 1970s, universities both domestically and internationally have established departments of Materials Science and Engineering and offered courses in the field. Currently, the content of material science courses worldwide has not yet been standardized, and the content of material science textbooks also varies greatly. The content of this book focuses on the theoretical foundations of materials, combining various types of materials to explain their fundamental theories and applications. This is because the authors believe that fundamental theories are universal, applicable to all materials, relatively well-defined, and generally do not become outdated regardless of how materials and processes are updated. Moreover, the study of fundamental theories is a crucial step in developing new materials and cultivating students' innovative abilities. This book, based on the long-term teaching experience of three teachers from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University in Beijing, covers various types of materials such as metals and alloys, ceramics, and silicates, emphasizing the fundamental theories and applications of materials science. It includes topics such as crystallography, crystal defects, the structure and bonding theory of solid materials, solid thermodynamics and phase diagrams, solid dynamics (diffusion), and phase transformations. This book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in materials science and engineering in universities, as well as a reference for students from other disciplines specializing in materials and for a broad range of material professionals.
