Is the newborn toxic erythema baby uncomfortable?

Patient's question:

The child has been born for more than 20 days. Recently, there are often red spots on the face, which disappear after a few days and then appear in other places. The new diagnosis is toxic erythema. Is the child with toxic erythema uncomfortable?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal toxic erythema, also known as neonatal urticaria, is a transient skin disease characterized by redness, papules, and pustules, occurring within the first two weeks of life. Most cases appear within four days after birth, while a few may appear at birth and usually resolve within two weeks. It can occur on any part of the body but is more common in areas under pressure, such as the buttocks, back, and shoulders. The lesions may resolve within a few hours and then recur quickly after a self-healing period of 7 to 10 days, without any other systemic symptoms. Currently, the baby still has redness on the face after 20 days, which may be considered facial eczema. It is recommended to take the baby to a local regular hospital for a dermatological consultation for examination and symptomatic treatment.
