Patient's question:
The child has a hemangioma in their ear. Actually, it doesn't cause any symptoms, so can it go away on its own?Doctor's answer:
It depends on what type of hemangioma it is, and also on the size of the hemangioma. Hemangiomas include true tumors and vascular malformations. Vascular malformations, like true tumors, do not disappear on their own and will accompany them throughout their lives. Congenital true tumors can regress on their own, but the process is very slow, generally taking 5-10 years. Infantile hemangiomas have a rapid proliferation phase at 2 months and 6 months, respectively. During the proliferation process, severe hemangiomas may also compress surrounding normal tissues and organs.
