Is a hemangioma serious?

Patient's question:

The child now has a large hemangioma on their face. It looks quite serious to me. Is a hemangioma serious?

Doctor's answer:

Hemangiomas are very serious, and when the condition is severe, they can undergo malignant transformation. Hemangiomas in children are common congenital deformities in pediatric surgery. They are primarily found on the face, body surface, torso, limbs, and as red and purple, well-defined, non-palpable masses that protrude from the body surface. With growth and development, the mass increases. Clinically, infantile hemangiomas are classified into capillary hemangiomas, cavernous hemangiomas, and strawberry hemangiomas. Capillary hemangiomas usually disappear within one to two years of age. Cavernous hemangiomas and strawberry hemangiomas often require surgical treatment.
