The entire autobiography was written intermittently during his life of wandering and persecution. Through unparalleled self-confession, Rousseau presents his unique life experiences, thoughts, emotions, and actions to the world, guiding us to delve into the mysteries and deep-seated issues of humanity and society of that era. The Confessions records not only the author's own faults and shortcomings but also the duality of character shared by every individual. The Confessions is a Confessions for ordinary people—when you feel arrogant and self-righteous in modern times, read The Confessions, and it will make you ashamed of your flaws and insignificance; when you feel and lost, read The Confessions, and it will help you uncover your "shining" humanity, making you rejoice in your virtues and strengths. The inner world depicted and analyzed by Rousseau in The Confessions is already quite authentic. However, people have their own perspectives on everything in the world, and it is inevitable to form various opinions about a controversial figure like Rousseau. As the spiritual mentor of the bourgeoisie and the revolution, his thoughts and philosophy are certainly not to be ignored. He advocated individual freedom and liberation, opposing the constraints of religious doctrines and feudal moral codes. In The Confessions, he promotes a life attitude centered on the individual, starting from personal interests and hobbies, and regards freedom and equality as the natural essence of humanity. Therefore, this autobiography is also a manifesto of individual liberation. This bourgeois humanistic thought undoubtedly held great revolutionary significance in the 18th century, inspiring people to overthrow feudal ideology and advance history.
