Seasonal Musings (Original Version, Collector's Edition)

Author: (English) George Gissing, translated and compiled by Li Jian
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2005-05-01
Features: The English title of this book is Henry Leycraft's Notes, and following the naming convention of the existing translation, it is titled Seasonal Sketches. This is also consistent with Gissing's explanation of the basic structure of the book in the preface. This book is a set of essays written by Gissing himself, with a strong autobiographical nature. Therefore, the descriptions of this person in the preface are purely fictional, or rather, some form of interpretation by Gissing of himself and the book. In this book, we first see the thoughts and feelings of a pastoral recluse deeply enchanted by lake and mountain scenery. The tranquility and serenity in Gissing's description of this recluse's life may be the very thing that moves readers with equally sensitive souls. As a highly talented writer, Gissing is both sensitive and delicate. He weaves the pleasure of living in the mountains and forests into the changing seasons, naturally conveying a sense of longing to the readers who read with care, stirring their hearts and souls. The beautiful scenes of the recluse's life depicted by him easily remind us of the imagery of "picking chrysanthemums under the eastern fence, leisurely seeing the southern mountain" by Tao Yuanming. However, this theme is also intertwined with another theme that accompanies the book throughout, as pointed out by Raymond Williams—the "loneliness and solitude of the individual in the crowd." It constitutes another lingering emotion in the book—a sense of anxiety hidden deep within the author's heart. His discussion in the book about the changes in modern British life is not related to this.
