Features: Idioms are special forms of language that are conventionalized and commonly used, characterized by vivid imagery, concise form, and profound meaning. They are the vitality and spirit of language. Idioms are like mirrors, reflecting the cultural characteristics of a nation and possessing strong national identity. In Chinese, idioms are predominantly four-character phrases, whereas the structure and form of English idioms are not as uniform and regular as Chinese idioms. The features of English idioms are: first, fixed form; second, fixed meaning. Even if some English idioms have variations, they are all conventionalized and cannot be changed arbitrarily. This book combines knowledge and interest, helping readers correctly understand and use English idioms. It can help readers improve their English proficiency, expand their linguistic knowledge, and enrich their effective vocabulary. It can also broaden readers' horizons and enhance their interest in foreign cultures by leveraging the cross-cultural background of idioms. The book collects approximately 350 of the most frequently used English idioms. Each idiom is first introduced through "inferring meaning from context," helping readers recognize and understand common misconceptions, guiding them to deduce and memorize the meaning of idioms based on their literal meanings. Subsequently, it provides accurate explanations of the meanings of idioms in English-Chinese (bilingual) format, accompanied by example sentences to teach readers how to use them correctly. For idioms with legendary origins, the compiler introduces their sources, enabling readers to understand the profound and diverse foreign cultures hidden behind these idioms. The greatest feature of this book is its classification of complex idioms according to common objects in daily life. Within each category, idioms are arranged by keywords, making it convenient for readers to search by category and keywords, and facilitating systematic associative learning and memorization of idioms.
