Features: In 1977, China resumed the college entrance examination (Gaokao), and in that winter, over 5 million young people aged between 18 and 30, from rural areas, factories, pastoral regions, schools, and government agencies, flocked to the examination halls. After a 10-year interruption, the Gaokao was finally restored. In July 1978, another 6 million people took the exam. To commemorate this exam, which was pivotal to the nation's future, China Overseas Chinese Publishing House invited nearly two dozen cultural elites with higher education backgrounds from the 77/78 cohort—such as the contemporary renowned writers and scholars Chen Jiangong, Zhou Guoping, Xiao Fengxiu, Ye Zhaoyan, Wu Si, Lei Yi, Yang Huilin, Guo Fang, and Han Xiaohui—to write personal recollections. These essays were compiled and published, authentically documenting their individual experiences of entering university in 1977, witnessing the history of that era, and offering significant readability. They also hold deep educational value for today's readers. In this book, 20 cultural elites recount their journey into the ivory tower during that extraordinary time. These authors from diverse professions describe their struggles and gratitude in getting admitted to university. This process can be considered a crucial turning point in their lives, marking a period of great achievement.
