Features: Song Ci (a genre of Chinese poetry) is a dazzling and brilliant gem on the crown of ancient Chinese literature, traditionally paired with Tang poetry as the "Double Perfection," both representing the pinnacle of literary achievement. Broadly speaking, Ci originally belonged to the category of poetry but gradually developed its own distinct status alongside traditional poetry. Through the passionate dedication and brilliant talents of countless Song Dynasty Ci poets, who meticulously crafted and refined their works, they created numerous treasures that were both gentle and noble, reflecting the spirit of their times and possessing a unique artistic charm different from traditional poetry. As a result, Song Ci stood shoulder to shoulder with Tang poetry, each with its own merits. The great sinologist Wang Guowei once said in The World of Ci (《》): "The essence of Ci lies in its subtlety and elegance. It can express what poetry cannot and yet cannot fully express what poetry can. The realm of poetry is vast, while the voice of Ci is long." Song Ci embodies the splendid coexistence of two major styles—lyrical grace and boldness. Within these styles, poets each possess unique individual characteristics, and those who combine both styles to create their own distinct schools, such as Jiang Kui's "pure and refined elegance" (), further enrich the vibrant literary landscape. Landscapes, rural scenes, leisurely pursuits, and patriotic aspirations became themes of Ci, transforming it from a genre confined to flower-and-moon settings to one that embraced the broader tapestry of social life. From the perspective of modern readers' tastes, works like "The Great River Flows Eastward" () from the bold school are more readily embraced. Song Ci drew inspiration from ancient texts like the Book of Songs (), the Chu Ci (), and poetry from the Han, Wei, and Six Dynasties periods, while also providing essential elements for later Ming and Qing Dynasty drama and fiction. Even today, it continues to refine people's sentiments and brings us profound artistic enjoyment.
