Features: The Public English Test System (PETS) is a national English proficiency examination system designed, developed, and administered by the National Education Examination Center of China. It was supported financially by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and technically by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) during its development process, becoming a collaborative project in Sino-British cultural exchange. PETS consists of five levels and is currently the only multi-level authoritative English testing system in China that is open to the entire society. It is based on reforming the old examination assessment system, aiming to reasonably set evaluation standards for each level according to the actual conditions of English teaching in China and the needs of social development. It focuses on testing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, gradually addressing the issue of "silent English" among learners. It ensures the equivalence of exam scores across different sessions at the same level and gradually links the exam results to admissions, overseas studies, and self-study examinations, diversifying the use of exam scores. It is launched in the form of a national "academic certificate" examination and will gradually replace more than ten existing English exams in China. PETS Level 5 has officially replaced the English exams for government-sponsored overseas study (WSK and EPT), while Levels 2 and 3 have officially replaced the English exams for non-English majors in higher education diplomas and self-study examinations for higher education. The results of Level 2 exams will also be used for college admissions, and Levels 2 and 3 can respectively replace foreign language proficiency tests for secondary and vocational school admissions. Since its launch in September 1999, PETS has rapidly expanded from pilot programs in 10 provinces and cities to 31 provinces and cities across the country, with the number of examinees increasing by 40% to 60% annually. At the same time, PETS has gained popularity among primary and secondary school students and their parents. To help young learners successfully pass the PETS exam, the PETS teaching and research team of the Children's Department at Beijing New Oriental, comprising star teachers with extensive teaching experience, has carefully compiled this series of books. Below are the writing principles, main content, and outstanding features of this book:
