Features: The book was compiled from August 2004 to March 2006, lasting one and a half years. It mainly includes fossil woods of gymnosperms and angiosperms from the Late Paleozoic to the Cenozoic. A total of 105 fossil wood localities from 15 provinces (regions) in China were collected for research and compilation. The book not only conducts systematic taxonomic research and describes the main characteristics of 106 genera and 181 species, including 3 new genera and 10 new species, but also explores the causes of fossil wood formation, the evolutionary trends of wood anatomical structures, and the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment they reflect. During the compilation process, due to the short time and heavy tasks, in addition to making full use of previous research achievements, only the specimens accumulated by the authors over the years and a small number of newly collected specimens were studied in detail, providing some new materials for the book. The compilation of this book is of great reference value for improving the research system of fossil wood in China, studying the paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, and paleogeography of related geological periods in China and the world, as well as understanding the development and evolution of plants and the geological history of the Earth. It can also provide meaningful reference materials for related teaching and science popularization. During the compilation process of this book, Professor Zhou Zhiyan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, received multiple times of meticulous guidance and repeatedly reviewed the manuscript, proposing many extremely valuable suggestions and advice.
