Vocabulary and grammar are too easy. This book is the sister volume of Xu Guozhang English, but it contains more content and more contemporary articles. It is an invaluable English learning textbook. The Self-Study Manual is a supplementary teaching material and reference book for teachers and self-learners using Newly Compiled Xu Guozhang English, Volumes I and II. The Self-Study Manual can also be used independently as a workbook for grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension practice, as well as a collection of self-assessment test questions. The Self-Study Manual is divided into the following three parts: Exercise Answers (ANSWERSTOEXERCISES); Self-Test Papers (SELF-HELPTESTPAPERS) with Answers; and Dictation Passages (PASSAGESFORDICTATION). The Exercise Answers include all the exercises and standard answers from Newly Compiled Xu Guozhang English, Volumes I and II. The exercise sections are printed in the same format as the original books. The answer sections are printed in bold for easy reference. Readers without the textbooks can use this manual alone for practice, making it convenient and practical. It should be noted that some exercises, especially translation exercises from Chinese to English, may have more than one correct answer. Due to space limitations and considering the current level of readers, we provide only one answer we believe is the best for reference by teachers and readers.
Self-Test Papers The Self-Study Manual contains 32 self-test papers, one for each lesson. It includes approximately 1,500 grammar and vocabulary exercises; 32 cloze tests; and 32 reading comprehension exercises. Each self-test paper includes the following sections: A. Spelling Check B. Complete Sentences C. Select the Best Choice for Each Sentence D. Fill in the Best Choice E. Reading Comprehension Sections A and B are designed based on the lesson content to test vocabulary mastery. Due to the limited number of new words in each lesson, some vocabulary may repeat in Sections A and B. Test-takers should be truthful and not change answers after completing the SPELLINGCHECK section. Section C is a multiple-choice exercise that includes grammar, sentence structures, and vocabulary. Each paper has 35 questions, and the entire book is arranged in order of difficulty, progressing from elementary to intermediate. Section D is a cloze test, focusing on passages and dialogues rather than single sentences. This section emphasizes understanding the content of the passage and also includes some grammar and vocabulary testing. Section E is a reading comprehension exercise. The 32 passages included in this book are diverse in theme and arranged by difficulty. The test questions mainly target the understanding of the passage content, as well as the understanding of individual words and sentences within the passage. The standard answers for the self-test papers are provided at the end of the book for readers to check.
Dictation Passages This book includes 52 dictation passages, most of which were collected and used by the editor in actual teaching over the years. The content is varied and appropriately challenging. These passages are primarily intended for teachers to use in the classroom. Self-learners can use them as supplementary reading material. Before the section on dictation passages, the editor wrote an article titled "How to Dictate," based on their own teaching experience, for the reference of teachers.
