Features: This book is an academic work that combines theoretical analysis with policy research. It examines the development positioning and strategies of the three major metropolitan agglomerations from a macro level of national strategy, while also proposing countermeasures and suggestions for several major practical issues within the agglomerations regarding coordinated development. It is strategic, targeted, and actionable, with innovations in research methods, data analysis, and research perspectives. It holds certain academic value.
First, it employs new methods. For example, Chapter 3 uses the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method to analyze the urban efficiency of the three major metropolitan agglomerations; Chapter 5 employs factor analysis to quantitatively assess the distribution of advantageous development spaces in the three major metropolitan agglomerations.
Second, its new data. For instance, Chapter 4 collects and mines land use data for Beijing and Shanghai, using it to evaluate land use performance; Chapter 6 mines and analyzes population census data for the three major metropolitan agglomerations, exploring the patterns of population change in urban agglomerations.
Third, it adopts new perspectives. For example, Chapter 7 takes the spatial flow of migrant workers as an observation angle to comparatively analyze the cultural differences among the three major metropolitan agglomerations.
Fourth, it offers new insights into the development patterns of urban agglomerations. For instance, Chapter proposes the phased development patterns of urban agglomerations such as "strong core," "spillover," "networking," "integration," and "coupling"; the national economic systems of the three major metropolitan agglomerations exhibit a high degree of relative independence; the core issue of urban agglomerations is inter-city relations; the industrial homogenization between cities should not be the focus of government attention, but rather the space where market forces play a role. Chapter 6 proposes that population growth follows a wave-like progression pattern, and population distribution changes not only follow a concentric diffusion pattern but also a hierarchical diffusion pattern and an axial diffusion pattern, representing the spatial superposition of three driving forces.
This book has distinctive features in the theory and methods of urban agglomeration research, providing theoretical support for the healthy development of urban agglomerations in China. It holds practical significance for addressing the challenges faced by the three major metropolitan agglomerations and promoting their coordinated development.
