Features: Language is a product of a certain society and develops along with its progress and changes. Among the elements of language, vocabulary is particularly evident in its development and transformation. As a carrier of vocabulary, a dictionary records, reflects, and transmits language, serving as a tool for describing its evolution and changes. In other words, a dictionary should promptly reflect and embody the development and transformation of language, especially the obsolescence of old words, the emergence of new words, and the evolution of word meanings. This is the fundamental requirement for keeping dictionary compilation up-to-date and also the primary motivation for organizing this revision.
To this end, we have added over 4,000 new words and phrases, such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), technophobia (fear of technology), autocross (off-road car racing), and transgene (transgenic organism), adhering to the principles of representativeness, stability, and practicality. These additions reflect the spirit of the times, showcase technological advancements, and capture emerging phenomena.
Another goal of this revision is to adjust the internal layout and improve the binding design to make it more user-friendly and convenient for readers to consult. In terms of layout, we strive for a more rational arrangement, well-organized entries, and precise, convenient word meaning organization. Regarding the binding, we aim for a more aesthetically pleasing design with elegant colors, high-quality materials, and durable binding.
Since its publication in 1986, the New English-Chinese Mini Dictionary has been deeply loved by readers for its "emphasis on definitions, with more entries than similar dictionaries." This revision is a response to the readers' affection for the dictionary. Whether by adding new words and phrases or improving the layout and binding, it reflects a commitment to serving readers and integrating this principle into the dictionary's brand image.
We hope our efforts will be recognized by the readers, and we hope our original intentions will be acknowledged by society!
