Features: The manual is an important component of formative assessment for students, adopting a modular design that aligns with the themes of the textbook. Each module covers the four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—as well as the language knowledge learned, staying synchronized with the textbook. The manual has the following key features:
1. Promotes the concept of "learning through assessment and assessing while learning." The process of self-assessment is not only about checking one's learning progress but also about completing various assessment tasks, exercises, and activities, which are equally a learning process. It requires assessment tasks to be familiar and somewhat authentic language activities for students.
2. Clear assessment objectives that reflect the role of formative assessment in student development. Each module begins with a general assessment objective for that module, which aligns with teaching objectives. The purpose of this section is to cultivate students' awareness of purposeful learning and evaluation, as well as to help them identify and correct problems during the assessment process.
3. Emphasizes the "task-based assessment" design philosophy, highlighting the principles of "learning for use" and "learning through use." The manual replaces traditional test items with flexible and diverse language tasks to enhance and improve students' comprehensive language proficiency. It avoids or minimizes the use of objective questions, encouraging students to speak and act more, thereby improving language skills through "doing."
4. Centers the assessment on students, reflecting the principles of self-reflection, independent thinking, and self-development. Each module begins with a general assessment objective, includes checks on various language skills and language items in the middle, and ends with a module summary check and a learning log. This establishes a complete record for students' self-assessment and learning, fostering good habits of self-reflection and self-development.
5. Reflects the principle of multi-dimensional assessment. Although the assessment is primarily student-centered, some tasks require collaboration among students to complete. The self-assessment section, module comprehensive assessment section, and learning log section after each activity or task provide teachers and parents with convenient ways to understand and evaluate students. A combination of grade ratings, quantitative scoring, and descriptive evaluation demonstrates the diversity of assessment methods.
Assessment is an important component of English courses and a key guarantee for achieving course objectives. We hope this manual not only helps students review, check, and consolidate the language knowledge and skills they have learned but also improves their practical language application abilities, while also providing teachers with valuable insights into students' learning progress.
