Features: This book selects 100 renowned photographers from the history of world photography and pairs them for comparative analysis based on their main characteristics. It tells the stories of their growth, reveals the mysteries of their creation, evaluates the reasons for the success of their works, and discloses the historical and practical value of photography. The book includes 4 categories of photography with 50 insightful commentaries, 100 masterpieces of growth, and 300 classic works. It is divided into four major categories: Documentary, Landscape, Fashion, and Self.
Documentary is the most fundamental feature of photography. Broadly speaking, the release of a camera's shutter is a process of recording visual images. However, in this context, documentary is primarily limited to the realm of social documentary, referring to the pure recording of social reality by photographers, with the aim of revealing the direction of social development and preserving a visual archive of human survival. From the early 20th-century masters such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen to the outstanding journalists of Magnum Photos in the late 20th century, the trajectories of human existence have been meticulously captured through the lens, forming a 20th-century visual chronicle. Comparing the works of these photographers is like browsing through the annals of world events, often leaving one "shaken and moved."
Since the birth of photography, landscape has always been a favorite among photographers. Whether used as a tool for geographical exploration, like early American Western photography, or as a means of capturing pure aesthetic light and visual beauty—the dialogue between nature and humanity has continued to unfold through the lenses of photographers, both refining their character and leaving behind numerous texts of natural realism. However, since the great American photographer Ansel Adams pioneered the grand hall of black-and-white landscape photography, it has seemed almost impossible for successors to surpass his classic examples, leaving many mysteries for landscape photography. Here, urban landscapes with humanistic characteristics are also included to expand the scope of landscape photography and offer more inspiration.
Photography and fashion have always been inseparable. Compared to other art forms, perhaps only photography technology, which keeps pace with high-tech development, can match the pace of fashion changes. On one hand, photography records the progress of fashion with its unique sensitivity; on the other hand, it also drives the advancement of fashion from different perspectives. Countless outstanding photographers have played important roles, adding vibrant colors to the sky of fashion. These fashion photographs not only depicted the aesthetic styles of human life at the time but also anticipated the trends of changing human aesthetics, leaving behind many thought-provoking memories… even after a century, their charm remains undiminished. Comparing the styles of fashion photography by different photographers is indeed a delightful experience.
Of course, the function of photography extends far beyond this. Especially as an increasingly fast and convenient art tool, many people prefer to use photography as a medium for self-affirmation. Through photography, they record themselves, their families, and friends, leaving behind enigmatic personal chronicles. In such a visual chronicle, these outstanding photographers either direct their lenses at themselves, using the popular self-portraiture mode to reveal once-private scenes to the public, catching people off guard; or focus on their families and friends, turning their immediate surroundings into a space for public reading, capturing the emotional journey of humanity in fleeting light and shadow; or even project their inner thoughts onto photographic paper through surreal imagery, weaving fantastical tales.
Of course, the categorization in this book is not absolute, especially since there are many cross-genre photographic comparisons that are difficult to strictly define. We simply hope that through comparison, new insights can be brought, the historical and practical value of photography disclosed, and a delightful journey through photography completed with over 300 classic works.
