Features: Qing porcelain decorations with text are extremely diverse, including poetry, couplets, folk sayings, auspicious phrases, and more, with even Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Arabic scripts. The Chinese decorative fonts range from regular script to running script, from clerical script to seal script; while foreign scripts are either meticulously written or casually composed. The era style of porcelain decorations with text is distinct. For instance, in the early Ming Dynasty, single-character auspicious phrases were predominant; during the Yongle and Xuande periods, Sanskrit gradually increased; in the mid-Ming Dynasty, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Persian scripts occupied significant areas of the wares; in the late Ming Dynasty, single-character auspicious phrases flourished again, with antique patterns emerging, and long poems were introduced by Kangxi, while antique patterns were rustic and playful, Yongzheng combined text and images, and during the Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns, imperial literary works remained popular. Antique patterns often carried a sense of stone and metal craftsmanship. Although the middle and late Qing Dynasty inherited the styles of previous dynasties, the painting was not as refined.
This book collects over 500 Ming and Qing antique and text-decorated wares, categorized into six sections based on content and presentation: antique patterns, Sanskrit, auspicious phrases, poetry, single-character auspicious phrases, and more. When introducing the origins of each decorative style, it provides detailed explanations of the decorative styles of different dynasties and evaluates the writing characteristics of the text, enabling readers to comprehensively grasp the knowledge related to text and antique patterns, thereby improving their overall ability to appraise porcelain.
