Features: This textbook is compiled based on the training objectives and teaching of the Road and Bridge Engineering Technology program. During the writing process, it is based on the newly promulgated Technical Standards for Highway Engineering (JTGB01-2003), General Specifications for Highway Bridge and Culvert Design (JTGD60-2004), Specifications for Highway Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete Bridge and Culvert Design (JTGD62-2004), and Specifications for Highway Masonry Bridge and Culvert Design (JTGD61-2005) (referred to as Bridge Code in this book), and follows the principle of "providing sufficient theory while emphasizing practice." The authors have carefully studied and grasped the new specifications before compiling this textbook. The book consists of four parts. In the General Introduction, it mainly introduces the development of bridge construction at home and abroad, the components of bridges, and the functions of bridges. In the section on the overall planning and design points of bridges, it briefly elaborates on the basic requirements and data for bridge design, as well as the design content, so that students can have a general understanding of the overall picture of bridge design work before delving into the chapters. The second part is Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete Beam Bridges. In Chapter 4, Structural Design of Reinforced Concrete and Prestressed Concrete Beam Bridges, the characteristics and applicable conditions of various beam bridges are introduced from the perspectives of cross-sectional forms and static systems. It also discusses in detail the structures of commonly used small and medium-span simple beam bridges on highways (primarily prefabricated bridges). In the following chapters, the design and load effect calculations of simple beam bridges (primarily prefabricated bridges) are elaborated in detail. Chapter 5, Calculation of Simple Beam Bridges, is one of the key teaching points. The principle of load distribution is a major calculation theory in highway bridge design. To maintain systematicity, this book groups together the commonly used calculation methods. Chapter 6, Bearings of Beam Bridges, focuses on explaining the function of bearings, the structures of various types of bearings, and their applicable scenarios. Chapter 7 covers other types of bridges. Given the continuous development of new systems and technologies in bridge construction, technical personnel in highway and bridge engineering must not only be able to solve design and construction problems for common medium and small-span bridges but also often face the task of handling more complex bridge systems in production. Therefore, this chapter provides a concise overview of continuous beam bridges, T-shaped rigid frame bridges, continuous rigid frame bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and suspension bridges, respectively, from the perspectives of structural types, structural features, and bridge structures. The third part discusses Masonry and Reinforced Concrete Arch Bridges, which are widely adopted bridge types in China's highway bridges. In Chapter 9, Structural Design of Arch Bridges, in addition to introducing the general components of arch bridges, it focuses on the structures and details of hollow arch bridges and box-section arch bridges. Only some structural features of other types of arch bridges (such as truss arch bridges, rigid frame arch bridges, and composite system arch bridges) are briefly described. Chapter 10 emphasizes the determination of main dimensions and the selection of arch axis shapes for arch bridges. Chapter 11, Calculation of Arch Bridges, is a key learning point in this part, with detailed introductions to the design and calculation of equal-section chain-line arches. The fourth part, Bridge Piers and Abutments, explains the structural forms and design calculation methods of the parts of piers and abutments above the foundation. In terms of content, in addition to the commonly used gravity-type piers and abutments, it also introduces the structural forms of various lightweight piers increasingly adopted in highway bridges and the key points of flexible pier calculations.
