The admirable quality of these young, spirited individuals was their unwavering courage to move forward, without hesitation or fear of being ridiculed as "naive" or "ultra-left." They were solely devoted to the liberation of the nation and the freedom and enlightenment of the people. They were determined not to be scholars who turned a blind eye to the world's affairs, only studying the classics. They were actors and fighters, and future generations should understand them. The argument that the League of Left-Wing Writers was a product of "ultra-leftist thought" is superficial. The League was born amidst the white terror following the April 12th Massacre and endured a brutal counter-revolutionary cultural suppression for six years. Its ranks grew from an initial small team of four or fifty people into a vast army with banners unfurled. The literary achievements it created were unprecedented and exceptionally rich, and all of this was also inseparable from the sincere assistance and full support of many Chinese and foreign friends.
