Publish Date: 2006-12-01
Features: Lu Xun himself. I had thought that I was no longer the kind of person who felt compelled to speak out urgently. But perhaps I still haven’t forgotten the loneliness and sorrow of my own past, so sometimes I still can’t help but raise my voice, to comfort the brave souls who run in solitude, so that they are not afraid to forge ahead. As for whether my cries are brave or sorrowful, loathsome or laughable, I don’t have the time to care. But since it is a cry, of course it must follow orders. So Lu Xun often used bent words—adding an empty wreath to Yu’s tomb in Medicine, and not narrating that Shan Si’s dream of seeing her son in Tomorrow, because the leader at the time did not advocate negativity. As for myself, I also did not want to pass on the loneliness I thought was my own to young people who were still dreaming as I had in my youth.
In this way, it can be imagined how far Lu Xun’s novels are from art. Yet to this day, he is still recognized as a novelist, and even has the chance to have his short stories collected. No matter what, it must be said that it is a fortunate thing. Though good fortune may make Lu Xun uneasy in his heart, he still takes some comfort in the thought that there may still be readers in the world. So Lu Xun finally collected his short stories and called them A Call to Arms.
