Features: This book is the concluding outcome of the major project "Writing College Language Teaching Materials and Researching Language Education for the 21st Century" (Project No. 2001ZDXM74004) under the Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education. The book is divided into seven parts to explore issues in language education: (1) Macro Thinking; (2) Testing and Training; (3) Modern Chinese Language Teaching; (4) Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL); (5) Foreign Language Teaching; (6) Quality Cultivation; (7) Academic Style and Literary Taste. In the 21st century, we face increasingly complex challenges in language education. In the education of Chinese as a native language, how can we effectively improve students' language proficiency? In TCSL, how can we better and more deeply assist foreign students in understanding, mastering, and applying Chinese? In foreign language teaching for Chinese students, how can we more effectively help them understand, master, and apply foreign languages through Chinese? In the process of Chinese language education, how can we theoretically and practically address the relationship between the common language and dialects, as well as the relationship between Chinese and ethnic languages or foreign languages? To meet the needs of social development, how can language education cultivate bilingual and multilingual individuals, optimizing the language skills of the younger generation? To adapt to the demands of social progress, how can language education keep pace with the pace of modernization and informatization? How can we strengthen the integration of modernization and informatization-related content in language education to give our language education a distinct 21st-century imprint? And so on—these and other questions require long-term, multi-faceted research. This book attempts to address some of these issues.
