[Content Introduction] American Gods tells the story of the protagonist, Shadow, from his release from prison and his journey across the United States, filled with a series of extraordinary encounters. It follows his meetings with various gods who live on American soil, sparking many fascinating, eerie, and splendid stories. Shadow becomes a servant to an old man named Wednesday, who is actually Odin, an ancient Norse god. Odin arrived in North America in the 9th century, embodying the dreams of early Viking explorers from Norway. He is just one of the countless gods in America. Shadow later encounters Odin’s brother, the cunning god Loki; Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of cats; Chernobog, the Slavic god of darkness and death; Nyx, the West African trickster god; Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction; Anubis, the Egyptian god of the underworld; and Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of dawn, among others.
[Plot Summary] A storm is approaching—the war between the old and new gods is about to break out. Shadow is released from prison. His ideal is simple: return to his wife and reclaim his old life. But his wife is dead, and his past life has vanished into thin air. Just when he is at his wit’s end, a stranger appears by his side. He has a strange name—Wednesday—and seems to know everything about Shadow. He offers Shadow a job as his bodyguard, accompanying him on a journey across America. Shadow sets off, but gradually realizes that the America Wednesday explores is not entirely the real America. He seems to possess a divine power, enabling him to delve beyond reality, into the "backstage," revealing the forces that dominate American society and encountering various strange figures. They are gods. Their history is the history of America, and they have shaped it.
For thousands of years, people from all over the world—Norsemen, Egyptians, Arabs, Chinese, Irish, Africans—have gathered in America, from the earliest trickle of immigrants to the great wave of migration. They brought the myths and legends of their homelands, along with their gods. These gods enjoy their sacrifices, protect their followers, and allow them to survive and thrive in America. With the passage of time, new gods have gradually emerged. They are the gods of high technology, television, and the internet. People worship them, and they dominate the lives of modern America. Those who believe in the old gods are becoming fewer and fewer, and as a result, they have lost their divine power, sinking into the lower rungs of society, becoming prostitutes, taxi drivers. The old gods refuse to accept defeat. Wednesday travels across the country, with Shadow’s help, gathering the old gods scattered across America, preparing for a decisive battle against the new gods. A storm is approaching—the war between the old and new gods is about to break out. Shadow becomes the focal point of the struggle between the old and new gods. In the process, he gradually discovers his identity and his mission.
