Features: Luo Ergang (1901–1997) was a historian from Guixian, Guangxi, specializing in the history of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and the military systems of the late Qing Dynasty. During his youth, he studied under Hu Shi. In 1943, he wrote Five Years with My Teacher, documenting his five-year journey of learning from Hu Shi and the deep bond between teacher and student. The book received high praise from academia upon its publication. Historian Yan Gengwang remarked, "This book not only shows us how to be scholars but also how to be teachers—it is truly an extraordinary work of the past few decades." Notes on Hu Shi, completed in the 1990s, provides a vivid and detailed account of Hu Shi's academic pursuits, political career, social interactions, and personal life. Although the two books were written half a century apart and there are numerous works on Hu Shi's scholarly methods and life, these books, written by his junior disciple, offer a unique perspective. The books depict a scene of intellectual exchange and camaraderie, where the warm guidance of a teacher and the humble, earnest, and uncompromising pursuit of knowledge come together. The books have been widely circulated both in China and abroad, even earning the nickname of a "textbook." This reissue is a revised and supplemented version based on the 1998 edition.
