For convenience in writing and use, Han-to-English and English-to-Han translations are divided into two parts.
Part 1: Han-to-English Translation
This part consists of three chapters:
Chapter 1: Introduction to Han-to-English Translation, which introduces the requirements, standards, and characteristics of Han-to-English translation;
Chapter 2: Secrets to Mastering Han-to-English Translation, which focuses on several fundamental methods to improve Han-to-English translation skills. The better these methods are mastered, the faster the improvement in translation ability. It covers the five basic English sentence patterns, the five basic Chinese sentence patterns, and their translation strategies;
Chapter 3: Overcoming Difficulties in Han-to-English Translation, which is divided into three sections. To help readers improve quickly, each chapter is followed by targeted exercises, including article introductions, explanations of difficulties, and reference translations.
Part 2: English-to-Han Translation
This part consists of five chapters:
Chapter 1: Overview of English-to-Han Translation, which is divided into four sections, introducing the nature and purpose of translation, translation standards, the requirements of English-to-Han translation in the Level 8 examination, and the procedures for taking the exam;
Chapter 2: Basic English-Chinese Translation Techniques;
Chapter 3: Advanced English-Chinese Translation Techniques;
Chapter 4: Literary Translation Techniques;
Chapter 5: Translation Techniques for Other Text Types.
Each chapter is somewhat independent yet interconnected, and the translation techniques introduced are not limited to a single genre or type of text. This part also discusses English-Chinese translation issues for frequently tested categories such as government, science and technology, culture, news, and literature. Each section is accompanied by corresponding exercises, explanations, and reference answers.
At the end of the book is an appendix. The theoretical and technical sections of this book primarily introduce the basic theories of translation and translation techniques suitable for Chinese readers. The theoretical introductions are designed to be practical, accessible, and in-depth. The exercises included are diverse and engaging, with materials selected as new or relatively recent, giving the book a strong sense of modernity.
