Features: Addressing the characteristics of adult English learners, particularly self-learners, in the new edition, we first abandoned the practice of describing traditional mouth shapes and pronunciation techniques (in reality, self-learners find it difficult to master pronunciation solely based on diagrams and instructions). Instead, we adopted an inductive method that leverages the strengths of adult learners: mastering the same phonetic item through a certain number of example word pronunciation exercises. This is also a method that has been increasingly adopted in the United States and the United Kingdom in recent years. The book is divided into three parts. Part I is on language and intonation. The first unit briefly introduces the 26 English letters and the English phonetic symbols, listing the total table of English letters and phonetic symbols. Units 2 to 5 provide detailed explanations of the 48 English phonetic symbols, accompanied by numerous exercises in the pronunciation of English idioms and phrases to master each symbol. Unit 9 specifically highlights the unique intonation features of English, with abundant dialogue passages for practicing English intonation. Unit 10 summarizes the phonetic and intonation knowledge covered in the previous units. Additionally, each unit includes a vocabulary list and short daily English dialogues, preparing learners for a smooth transition to the second part, which focuses on learning everyday spoken English.
