Features: Since the 21st century, China's higher education has made remarkable progress, and textbook development has also advanced significantly. Currently, science and technology are evolving rapidly, with the widespread application of computers and the popularity of mathematical software, the world has fully entered the information age. These developments undoubtedly pose updated and stricter requirements for basic course textbooks, especially for mathematics textbooks. Under such circumstances, we have compiled this probability theory and mathematical statistics textbook suitable for undergraduate students of all disciplines, based on summarizing years of undergraduate mathematics teaching experience, exploring the development trends of undergraduate mathematics teaching, and analyzing the development trends of similar textbooks domestically and internationally. This book is compiled in accordance with the "Basic Requirements for the Teaching of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics" formulated by the Ministry of Education. It adheres to the principles of emphasizing fundamental concepts, cultivating basic abilities, and striving for close alignment with practical applications, while fully considering the trend of reduced teaching hours for probability theory and mathematical statistics courses. This book has the following features:
First, it highlights the fundamental ideas and basic methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics. The purpose of emphasizing these is to help students better understand the internal connections of each part of the content during the learning process, grasp the overall thinking and methods of probability theory and mathematical statistics, and assist students in mastering fundamental concepts, clarifying the relationships between concepts, and improving teaching effectiveness. In terms of teaching philosophy, it does not overly emphasize rigorous proofs or research processes but instead focuses more on allowing students to experience the essence and value of probability theory and mathematical statistics.
Second, it strengthens the cultivation of basic abilities. This book includes numerous examples and exercises, with in-depth discussions on problem-solving methods. The intention is to help students, after grasping the fundamental concepts, become familiar with the calculation process, master problem-solving techniques, and ultimately achieve faster calculation speeds and improved problem-solving skills.
Third, it is closely aligned with practical applications. The presentation of fundamental concepts in this book strives to start from real-world problems encountered in daily life, naturally leading to them. Examples and exercises often involve practical problems frequently faced in the objective world, such as those in natural sciences, engineering technology, economic management, and daily life. The hope is to enhance students' interest in learning probability theory and mathematical statistics and their ability to apply probability theory and mathematical statistics knowledge to solve real-world problems.
The book is divided into 8 chapters, covering topics such as random events and probability, random variables and their probability distributions, joint probability distributions of random variables, the digital characteristics of random variables, the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem, the basic concepts of mathematical statistics, parameter estimation, and hypothesis testing. Exercises are provided after each chapter, and reference answers to the exercises are appended at the end of the book.
