5. A person in dire straits, like a deity in a desolate temple, can also become a figure of prosperity when the stars align. In reality, such helpful figures are often within your network of connections. The key lies in whether you can recognize a hero with sharp eyes and distinguish the hidden benefactors. Helping others prosper also benefits yourself.
In the footsteps of the merchant path, Hu Xueyan privately asked Wu Mr.: "What will become of Wang Youling in the future?" At that time, Wu Mr. observed him from the side for a long time and then said, "Strange! Strange! His bone structure suggests great wealth and honor. However, his eyebrows and eyes reveal the danger of sudden death."
The death of "Mad Xu" shook Hu Xueyan. Learning from the past, he resolved not to let Wang Youling become another "Madman" and fall into the "danger of sudden death." At first, he was in a dilemma because he lacked the five hundred taels of silver. Now, clutching the silver note, he rushed to Wang Youling's home. Wang's father had been seriously ill for a long time, and Hu Xueyan's arrival was timely. The old man had just passed away, and Wang Youling was there, heartbroken.
"Xuexuan, please accept your loss with grace. The most urgent matter is to give Wang's father a proper burial!" Hu Xueyan comforted him. "In such dire straits, even a humble coffin for my father is beyond my means!" Wang Youling lamented. "Are you willing to lend?" Wang Youling was taken aback and said with a bitter smile, "Who would lend money to a useless scholar like me?"
"Don't worry, don't worry! What do you see in my hands?" Hu Xueyan showed him the five hundred taels of silver notes. Wang Youling was stunned and said, "We have no deep ties. You're just an employee at the money exchange. Such a large sum of money would surely bring trouble upon you. This is absolutely unthinkable!"
Hu Xueyan said confidently, "Don't worry, I have a plan for the Fu Kang side. If you feel uneasy, I have an idea. But I wonder, how do you feel about it?" Hu Xueyan's idea was to make them sworn brothers in the eight-bow ceremony! The destitute Wang Youling was overjoyed.
After exchanging their birth dates and making the vow, their terms of address changed. Hu Xueyan said, "Brother Youling! If the name is not right, the words will not be smooth. Now, as a younger brother, I offer a coffin and burial attire for my father. Isn't that reasonable?"
Wang Youling was moved to tears and choked up, saying, "Brother Xueyan, as if I owe you a great favor."
"Have you forgotten your vow of 'sharing joy and bearing hardship together'? A mere five hundred taels of silver is nothing!" Hu Xueyan said earnestly.
Wang Youling had originally planned to give his father a grand funeral, but with only five hundred taels left, he would have no capital to rise to prominence. Thus, with Hu Xueyan's careful planning, he wore mourning clothes and buried his father simply in the suburbs of Hangzhou, waiting to move him to a more honorable resting place when he achieved success.
Zhang Pangzi's nephew, hearing that someone had paid back the money for "Mad Xu," rushed to find Hu Xueyan. Unbeknownst to him, he received a new IOU, while Wang Youling had already left Hangzhou.
Filled with deep gratitude for Hu Xueyan, Wang Youling traveled north to "register his service" and, by paving the way through various connections, quickly presented his name card and letter (equivalent to modern business cards and self-recommendation letters) to meet He Guiqing, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Personnel in the capital.
He Guiqing, styled Congshan, was from Kunming, Yunnan.
