The entire book contains 240,000 words and is divided into three parts: Part "Already in Vain" includes 7 articles reviewing modern Chinese literature; Part "Enchanted Homeland" includes 10 articles reviewing Hong Kong literature; Part "Water Moon and Mirrored Flower" includes 5 articles studying ancient Chinese poetry. As a professor in the School of Humanities at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the author has a special concern for Hong Kong literature and its position in the history of Chinese literature. Therefore, the book has a strong local flavor: first, in terms of length, the second part accounts for half of the entire book; second, in terms of content, the author is clearly interested in two "opposite" perspectives, namely the process of incorporating Hong Kong literature into the history of Chinese literature and the process of Hong Kong literature entering the history of Chinese literature. Through comparison, the author reveals many previously obscured barriers and prejudices between the two sides regarding the heterogeneous literature under the influence of multiculturalism.
