Will leukocytosis be leukemia?

Patient's question:

Increased white blood cells could it be leukemia? The child has been like this for some time, and as parents, we are very worried. We hope the doctor can give us some advice.

Doctor's answer:

White blood cells are generally indicative of inflammation. If the count exceeds 30,000 and the morphology is abnormal, it could be leukemia, primarily determined by morphology. Red blood cells are most commonly increased due to relative polycythemia, such as in cases of lung disease. However, abnormally high red blood cell counts indicate a malignant disease: polycythemia vera. It's quite complex, as a conclusion requires comprehensive testing. High white blood cell counts suggest inflammation, while leukemia, also known as blood cancer, involves the degeneration of blood cells.
