What is ABO hemolytic disease?

Patient's question:

What is a hemolytic disease of ABO type? The child has been in this condition for some time, and as parents, we are very concerned. We hope the doctor can give us some advice.

Doctor's answer:

This condition is usually mild and does not require induced labor in advance. After birth, most infants do not need special treatment. If jaundice and anemia are severe, exchange blood transfusion and phototherapy can be performed. Newborn hemolytic disease caused by ABO blood type incompatibility between mother and child is called "Newborn ABO Hemolytic Disease." More than 90% of affected infants' mothers are blood type O, while the infants are type A or B. This ABO blood type incompatibility between mother and child is not uncommon in all pregnancies, accounting for about 20%. However, the occurrence of newborn hemolytic disease is rare, occurring in only about 1/150, and the symptoms are mostly mild, often being overlooked.
