In the same year in December, he joined the Communist Youth League of China, and in May 1931, he became a member of the Communist Party of China. He participated in the struggles against the encirclement campaigns in the Xiangjiang Soviet Region and the establishment of the Xiangxi, Hubei, and Chuanxi Revolutionary Base Area. With extraordinary perseverance, he endured intense pain and insisted on marching north with the army, crossing snow-covered mountains and grasslands. In September, he arrived in Huixian County, Gansu Province, where his wounds worsened severely, leading to the amputation of his left arm.
