What is an ABO hemolytic disease?

Patient's question:

Doctor, hello. What is ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn? Our child has been in this condition for some time. As parents, we are very worried and hope the doctor can give us some advice.

Doctor's answer:

Children suffering from ABO hemolytic disease are called ABO hemolysis infants. ABO hemolysis refers to the condition where the mother is blood type O, and the husband is blood type A, B, or AB. If the fetus is blood type A or B, it results in ABO blood incompatibility, clinically known as ABO hemolysis. This occurs because fetal red blood cells entering the mother's blood stimulate the mother's body to produce corresponding antibodies. When the antibody level in the fetus reaches a certain amount, the antigen-antibody reaction occurs, leading to the destruction of a large number of red blood cells and causing neonatal hemolytic disease. It requires timely treatment.
