Features: The essence of classical Chinese gardens is concentrated in Jiangnan, with a focus on Suzhou. The sheer number of small and large garden pavilions, along with their artistic mastery, are rarely seen in any region of the world today. The earliest private garden in Jiangnan was Gu Biqiang Garden in Suzhou during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Due to Suzhou's economic, cultural, and natural advantages, gardens flourished. Throughout the long feudal society, Suzhou gardens experienced cycles of prosperity and decline. After the liberation of the country, they were widely restored, and the renowned gardens of generations were once again restored to their former glory. In the old era, although scholars documented famous gardens, there were few who critically evaluated garden art. Systematic academic research on Suzhou's classical gardens began after liberation, led by Professor Liu Dunzhen of our institute's Chinese Architecture Research Laboratory and Architectural History Teaching and Research Group. More than three decades ago, he was one of the few who studied garden art. In the 1960s, he was responsible for the renovation of Nanjing Zhan Garden. Under his guidance, workers constructed a lake rock water and dry rockery in the southern part of the garden. He also planned the courtyard near the southern wall facing the street, creating a picturesque scene. This was an achievement of his in guiding the research team to combine theory with practice in garden design. This book is the culmination of years of research under his leadership, offering an extreme analysis of Chinese garden art. Although it focuses on the gardens of Suzhou, it is a summary of the history of garden design in China over the centuries. The manuscript has been compiled and published by the Architectural History Teaching and Research Group, and it will serve as a reference for future garden design. This book collects 21 articles by Professor Tong Jun, which provide in-depth analysis, research, and discussions on architecture and gardens, both domestic and international, as well as architectural education. It is accompanied by numerous illustrations. This book is suitable for architects, garden art professionals, and a broad readership for reference and reading.
