Features: The history of the insurance industry is a history of innovation in insurance enterprises. Over the past 20 years of reform and opening up, driven by the rich innovation of insurance enterprises, China's insurance industry has achieved remarkable growth. Since the 21st century, the development of the insurance industry has entered a new historical stage, with the mode of innovative growth shifting from government-led to enterprise self-innovation, making the role of enterprise innovation in the development of the insurance industry even more prominent. For insurance enterprises, after China joined the WTO, the degree of market openness in the insurance sector has increased, and market competition has become increasingly fierce. Coupled with factors such as deregulation and cross-industry operations, the situation for the survival and development of insurance enterprises has become increasingly severe, making innovation even more significant. However, so far, due to the lack of systematic and in-depth theoretical research on the innovation of insurance enterprises, insurance theory has been unable to effectively guide insurance enterprise practice or provide references for the formulation of national policies, resulting in unsatisfactory outcomes in the practice of insurance enterprise innovation. This book examines and applies strategic management theory, corporate capability theory, and innovation theory to attempt to find solutions to the problems of insurance enterprise innovation from the root cause. For insurance enterprises, all issues related to innovation revolve around competition. To survive and thrive in the fiercely competitive insurance market, insurance enterprises must establish their own competitive advantages. According to corporate capability theory, the competitive advantage of insurance enterprises originates from core capabilities. However, during the process of forming their own core capabilities, due to bounded rationality, "core rigidity" often arises. The existence of "core rigidity" prevents insurance enterprises from adjusting in time to adapt to external changes, ultimately leading to their failure in competition. To avoid the "core rigidity" trap and maintain competitive advantages, the only way for insurance enterprises is to create a continuous flow of innovation to ensure they can continuously adapt to the environment and form sustained competitive advantages. To achieve this, insurance enterprises must possess a certain level of innovation capability. The innovation capability of insurance enterprises is an inherent organizational ability with characteristics such as path dependency, dynamic gradualism, openness, competitiveness, and hierarchy. The innovation capability of insurance enterprises is influenced by six factors: corporate leadership, corporate culture, corporate organization and processes, information technology, customer strategy, and performance evaluation. , corporate leadership, due to its decision-making and control power over the production and operational activities and innovation initiatives of insurance enterprises, serves as one of the key sources and influencing factors of innovation capability. Leadership and management differ significantly in their functions, with leadership functions largely aligning with the role of "entrepreneurs" as described by Schumpeter, both of which primarily focus on innovation. The main ways in which insurance enterprise leaders promote innovation include: (1) ensuring successful implementation of corporate innovation through strong leadership; and (2) establishing a decentralized-leadership model to fully stimulate the initiative and creativity of employees, thereby fostering comprehensive innovation. Second, insurance enterprise culture is the primary driving force behind innovation. The overall innovation capability of insurance enterprises largely depends on employee creativity, and research has shown that employee creativity is closely linked to the corporate cultural environment. Insurance enterprise culture is a key element of innovation capability because it serves as an informal control mechanism, fostering communication and collaboration among employees while providing a sense of consistency through shared values. Given that innovation involves unpredictability, risk, and unconventional solutions, traditional formal control mechanisms struggle to manage it effectively, making culture a core factor in promoting insurance enterprise innovation. Building a culture of innovation in insurance enterprises is an important way to enhance their innovation capability. Establishing an innovative corporate culture requires consensus among leadership, followed by the adoption of scientific methods for design, cultivation, and reinforcement. Third, the innovation capability of insurance enterprises is an inherent organizational ability, which is inherently related to how the enterprise organizes its employees to accomplish tasks, i.e., its organizational structure and business processes. In the new business environment, the traditional pyramid-like organizational structure of insurance enterprises needs to be reformed to better foster innovation. The trend in organizational transformation for insurance enterprises is process-oriented, emphasizing the integrity and unity of process organizations in the design of the organizational structure. Some insurance enterprises have implemented a series of insurance reengineering (IR) programs characterized by process orientation, achieving some results but also facing limitations. To gain continuous innovation capability, insurance enterprises need to implement continuous transformation of business processes. Beyond process-oriented restructuring of existing organizations, it is essential to explore the fundamental relationship between organizational models and innovation. The evolution of corporate organizational models can be divided into six stages: functional dominance stage, process-sensitive stage, process-driven stage, process dominance stage, capability-based stage, and alliance-based stage. The innovation capability of insurance enterprises gradually strengthens as the organizational model evolves, reaching its peak in the alliance-based enterprise stage. For new insurance enterprises, leveraging modern technology may enable alliance-based operations. For traditional insurance enterprises, under current operating conditions and internal constraints, the optimal choice is to adopt a process-driven or process dominance model, focus on core capabilities, and develop alliance-based relationships in certain departments or areas when appropriate. Fourth, information technology is another significant source of innovation capability for insurance enterprises. Due to the special and important role of information in the production and management of insurance enterprises, information technology holds particular significance for them. The rapid development of modern information technology provides excellent opportunities for insurance enterprises to enhance their innovation capability. The main ways in which information technology enhances the innovation capability of insurance enterprises include: changing organizational structures and leadership models, increasing employees' knowledge and learning ability, and promoting collaboration along the insurance value chain. To fully leverage the opportunities brought by information technology development, insurance enterprises need to undertake information technology construction. The current focus of information technology construction in China's insurance enterprises is on several aspects, including data mining (DM), customer relationship management system (CRM) construction, and the development of core business systems under standardized conditions. The problems encountered in the process of informatization should be addressed through simultaneous efforts and mutual promotion at both the management and technical levels. Fifth, the customer service-related concepts and strategies of insurance enterprises are important factors determining their innovation capability. The influence of customers on the operations of insurance enterprises is inherently inevitable, and their impact on business performance and destiny is becoming increasingly significant. To adapt to changes in the business environment, insurance enterprises must shift from a "product-centric" to a "customer-centric" approach. The customer service concepts and strategies of insurance enterprises not only address the goal orientation of innovation but also enhance their innovation capability through reforms in culture, organization, management, and information technology to truly establish a "customer-centric" approach. The key and focus of implementing a "customer-centric" strategy for insurance enterprises lie in developing and implementing a customer relationship management system (CRM) to manage relationships with customers. Beyond focusing on end customers, insurance enterprises should also manage relationships with professional insurance intermediaries and banks, as these institutions have a significant impact on their innovation capability. Sixth, performance evaluation is another source factor of innovation capability for insurance enterprises. Performance evaluation holds a central position in the innovation capability system of insurance enterprises and has a strong influence on the other five elements. Performance evaluation is an important means and method of enterprise management and also a key pathway to gaining innovation capability. From the perspective of innovation capability, insurance enterprises should focus on both the overall evaluation framework and innovation evaluation. Performance evaluation methods such as the balanced scorecard (BSC) promote innovation capability through strategic management and incentive mechanisms. Direct evaluation of innovation includes both overall innovation evaluation and specific project evaluation. In overall innovation evaluation, although some scholars or organizations have established innovation evaluation indicator systems, many of these indicators are not directly applicable to insurance enterprises, and insurance enterprises should make necessary integrations and selections based on their own needs. Innovation project evaluation helps address how to overcome obstacles in the innovation process through evaluation to ensure projects are completed quickly and of high quality, and it can also evaluate innovation outcomes. The above six aspects explore the cultivation of innovation capability from the perspective of insurance enterprises themselves. However, in practice, the external market environment, regulatory environment, and related institutional arrangements also play a strong role in the cultivation and realization of innovation capability. Since enterprises can hardly change the environment through their own efforts, the government and industry organizations can play a positive role in altering the macro environment. To establish a macro environment conducive to enhancing the innovation capability of insurance enterprises, the government and relevant organizations should focus on improving the market environment, raising regulatory standards, and establishing a national insurance innovation system.
