Features: This book systematically presents the fundamental knowledge of stress wave propagation in solid media, which has broad application value in economic development, military technology, scientific research, safety, and environmental protection under dynamic load conditions such as explosions, impacts, and earthquakes. To suit beginners, the book discusses five aspects of content in a progressive manner: First, it starts with one-dimensional stress elastic waves, plastic waves, shock waves, and unloading waves in rods, gradually moving on to linear viscoelastic waves, nonlinear viscoelastic waves, and elastoplastic waves. Among these, the book provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the interaction between plastic loading waves and elastic unloading waves, particularly focusing on the propagation of the loading-unloading boundary. Then, it discusses one-dimensional strain plane waves, spherical waves, and cylindrical waves under three-dimensional stress, covering elastic waves, plastic waves, shock waves of solids under high pressure (high-pressure fluid dynamics), and viscoplastic waves. The third part explores the propagation theories of elastoplastic waves in flexible strings and beams under transverse impact loads, successively involving the propagation of coupled longitudinal and transverse waves in strings and the propagation of coupled bending moment disturbances and shear force disturbances in beams. Next, it introduces general elastodynamic wave theory. Finally, to adapt to the rapid development and widespread application of current computer numerical simulation, the book briefly summarizes numerical methods for stress waves, including the method of characteristics, finite difference method, and finite element method. The entire book focuses on nonlinear wave propagation in solids. The target readers of this book include researchers and teachers from universities and research institutions, engineering technicians, graduate students, and senior undergraduates. The book was awarded the First Prize of the Excellent Teaching Material Award by the University of Science and Technology of China. The research achievement "The Theory and Application of Elastoplastic Waves" was awarded the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1986). After being reviewed and approved by the Higher Education Engineering Mechanics Textbook Committee of the State Education Commission (now the Engineering Education Professional Teaching Guidance Committee), the book was recommended as a teaching material for engineering mechanics majors in 1989. The second edition was recommended as a teaching material for graduate students by the Degree Management and Graduate Education Department of the Ministry of Education in 2005.
