Features: "Christmas Lectures in Science" are public science lectures organized by the Royal Society of London during the Christmas season each year. This book consists of Christmas Lectures in Science by two renowned scientists, Michael Faraday and Jean-Pierre Poye. Faraday's lectures cover fundamental chemical knowledge. Through various demonstrations and experiments with candles, the author explains the scientific principles behind everyday phenomena and teaches young listeners how to conduct experiments, observe phenomena, and analyze scientifically. These six lectures were later compiled into The Story of the Candle and became a classic science popularization book.
Michael Faraday was born on April 22, 1791, in a poor blacksmith family in London, England. He had a passion for reading from a young age and became self-taught. He primarily engaged in research in electricity, magnetism, magnetic-optics, and electrochemistry. In 1825, he discovered benzene. In 1831, he discovered electromagnetic induction and established the law of electromagnetic induction. In 1833, he discovered the law of electrolysis and introduced concepts such as cathode, anode, ion, electrolysis, and electrode. In 1833, he invented the voltmeter. He first introduced the concept of field, used the term "magnetic field" in 1845, and introduced the concepts of electric field lines and magnetic field lines. In 1843, he experimentally proved the law of conservation of charge.
