Publish Date: 2006-11-01
Features: Less than a year after the launch of "Dakuyu," it has already established itself as a brand in the field of pure literature, gaining a strong reputation among both the publishing industry and readers. The market response has been enthusiastic, with steadily rising sales. Many readers are no longer just reading "Dakuyu" issue by issue but collecting, preserving, and purchasing it in sets, even gifting it (as mentioned on the editor's blog, many readers intend to buy it as a New Year gift for their friends and family). Just as the play "A Midsummer Night's Dream in Love and Death" was recently staged in mainland China, this issue of "Dakuyu" also features a special section on the play, providing a detailed account of its legendary journey over the past two decades, uncovering rich historical details and behind-the-scenes anecdotes. Two photos deeply moved me—one from 1986, showing the lead actors of the play, Jin Shijie and Ding Naiju, rehearsing in the living room of director Lai Shengchuan, with Lai Shengchuan's five-year-old daughter, Lai Fanyun, sleeping soundly on the sofa. Twenty years later, Lai Fanyun played the role of a nurse in both the 2006 Taiwan and mainland Chinese versions of the play. The book also includes color prints of precious stills and posters from the play, a treat for fans of "A Midsummer Night's Dream in Love and Death." To add a personal aside, since I used to watch through VHS tapes with snowy quality years ago and didn't find her particularly beautiful, this time you can take a look at her photos in the book.
