The World magazine praised this novel as "Shakespeare of the Blues!" The novel adopts the improvisational style of jazz music to narrate the story, propelling its progression and immersing readers in the melodies of Harlem jazz musicians' improvisations in the 1920s. This postmodern masterpiece has become an immortal classic in the history of American literature. To escape poverty and violence, Black man Joe and his wife Violet migrate from the South to the metropolis for a better life. Twenty years later, both their love and dreams have been lost in the city. Despondent Joe falls in love with a 18-year-old girl, Dorcas. The two, who share a tragic childhood, find solace and fulfillment in each other. When Joe discovers Dorcas dating other boys, he shoots and kills her. Violet appears at the funeral, attempting to beat Dorcas in the coffin, but is driven out. Joe falls into deep depression, and Violet tries to win back her husband's heart by seeking information about Dorcas, but to no avail. In the despair of solitude, Violet recalls her past with Joe, her family's history; Joe reflects on his past, his mother—a mentally unstable wild woman, and the seven transformations in his life. The entire novel is infused with the spirit of jazz and a bittersweet optimism. Jazz is Toni Morrison's latest novel to date and marks a milestone in her work, elevating her writing to a new level. The inner journeys of the main characters and the historical changes of African Americans in the United States since the Civil War are all depicted through a love story of life and death. The novel introduces jazz music techniques, employs diverse narrative styles, jumps between time and space, and weaves intricate plots, representing Morrison's unique creative style.
