Do children need to supplement calcium?

Patient's question:

Do children need to supplement with calcium? Do they need to be treated in the hospital? How long will it take for the condition to improve? Please help me!

Doctor's answer:

Hello, supplementing with calcium is not a conventional method. Calcium and vitamin D supplements are only given when calcium levels are low. If an infant is between 4 to 6 months old and is promptly supplemented with food, the typical dietary structure is reasonable, and the calcium contained in the food can fully meet the body's growth needs. Most vitamin D supplements are routine after birth for two weeks, and they can be stopped when outdoor activities last for more than two hours in the summer. If there are symptoms such as hyperhidrosis, pigeon chest, (cradle cap), night terrors, and other signs of calcium deficiency, blood calcium or alkaline phosphatase tests should be combined as indicators for whether calcium supplementation is needed. Then, calcium supplements should be provided based on the monitoring results.
