1. This workbook is a companion exercise to the book "A Comparative Translation Course from Chinese to English."
2. This workbook is divided into 31 units, with each original text passage designed for students to complete in two hours in class, with dictionary reference allowed. However, it must be emphasized to students: Do not look at the reference translations before or during translation; the reference translations are only for students to use as a reference and for comparison when preparing presentation reports.
3. One unit exercise can be assigned each week. If the Chinese-English translation course is only offered for one semester (18 or 20 weeks), teachers can selectively choose certain units for practice. If the course is offered for two semesters (36 or 40 weeks), teachers can appropriately add a few more text passages based on the situation.
4. The translation course teacher is mainly responsible for organizing students to effectively engage in five activities. (Detailed operational instructions can be found in "Comparative Translation Method – Preface" in "A Comparative Translation Course from English to Chinese," published by Tsinghua University Press in 2004.)
5. Students are required to prepare written presentation reports in the format of a short paper. After comparing their translations with the reference translations, the presenter should deliver a presentation on a topic of interest related to Chinese-English translation. It is best to arrange one two-hour presentation session per week, and the number of presentations each student should give should be determined by the class size—either once every two weeks or once every three weeks. Generally, each presentation session can accommodate about 10 students. That is to say, in a class of fewer than 25 students, each student can make a presentation every two weeks; in a class of around 35 students, each student can make a presentation every three weeks. If this is the case, with a semester of 18 weeks, students in a class can discuss a total of 180 topics related to Chinese-English translation in one semester; with two semesters, a total of 360 topics can be discussed, which is equivalent to students collectively studying several translation theory books that guide Chinese-English translation practice.
6. Students are required to use a translation theory to explain a technique issue in a Chinese-English translation practice. Translation theory books or journals can be searched for independently in the library or online.
