This book attempts to present, in a simple and vivid manner, the thoughts and research on Mozart by professional musicians in China today. Here, we firmly believe that the study and discourse on Mozart are not exclusive to Westerners. When we change our perspective and adjust traditional mindsets, a new realm of understanding and studying Mozart unfolds before us. Today, Mozart’s music has spread to every corner of the world thanks to the advantages of the internet era, making it easier and more free for people to listen to and understand him. We hope to share the voices from China with the world on the occasion of Mozart’s birthday, adding Eastern colors and vitality to the image of Mozart in a multicultural context.
Two hundred and fifty years later, Mozart’s name is already well-known to music lovers in China, and his music is constantly performed and listened to, becoming an art that appeals to all ages. The eternal Mozart has become an integral part of Chinese music culture. He freely roams the world of reality and thought, continuously bringing us inspiration and enlightenment. Mozart lives among us. He will appear before us at any moment, as long as we pay attention to listening and thinking about him. "Hello, Mozart!" When you meet him, don’t forget to greet him, because although he is 250 years old, he is always modern and youthful.
2006 was the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, and grand commemorative performances were held all over the world. Today, this musical genius has become a symbol of this globalized world and a brand in his hometown of Austria. Many people around the world, even those unfamiliar with his music, know this name. So, in the distant East of the 21st century, how do Chinese musicians accept, interpret, and evaluate this mysterious master and his music?
Eighteen students from the Musicology Department of the Central Conservatory of Music went on a fascinating journey to interview 26 renowned figures in China’s music world, including conductors, pianists, violinists, Western music historians, and ethnomusicologists. Among them are seasoned elders with vast knowledge, middle-aged scholars who have accumulated rich experience and exposure to new ideas and research findings both domestically and internationally, as well as emerging young artists.
These 18 students compiled their interview notes into the book Hello, Mozart and published it as a collection of interviews. I believe this is a meaningful endeavor. What moved me particularly was that so many distinguished scholars took the time to participate in these interviews with the younger generation, giving them the opportunity to understand their artistic careers and insights on various academic issues. At the same time, I also believe that this method of organizing students to interview experts on a specific topic will become a learning approach that combines theory and social practice for musicology students.
